Saxenda® - What is it? How does it work?

001 the medication

The Skinni Jab is just a casual term coined for a medication marketed under its brand name  - Saxenda® (Its medical drug name is Liraglutide). This medication is manufactured by Novo Nordisk, a world leader in the treatment of diabetes. They are a Danish pharmaceutical company and their medications are used across the UK, including the NHS. Saxenda®  is CE marked and approved for use in the UK by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

Saxenda® was approved as a treatment for diabetes in 2009 (marketed as Victoza), it was only recently approved for weight loss. The FDA approved its use in the USA in December 2014. The European Medicines Agency approved its use in Europe in January 2015. In 2017 it became available in the U.K as Saxenda®.

002 how does it work?

The medication helps you lose weight by suppressing your appetite. The simple answer it stops you from feeling hungry so you eat less. Most of have been on low-calorie diets - where we feel hungry most the time. Eventually, it is these cravings and hunger pangs that sabotage our best efforts.

Saxenda® is a derivative of a metabolic hormone (GLP-1) that occurs naturally in the body and helps control blood sugar, insulin levels, and digestion.

This is achieved as the drug acts in a similar manner to GLP-1.  GLP-1 is automatically released when food is eaten and subsequently sends a signal to the brain that the stomach is full.

By mimicking this hormone the medication causes the signal to be sent in error and tricks the brain into suppressing the desire for food. This is added to the drug’s ability to regulate blood glucose levels. For an in-depth answer, you can read our blog post about Saxenda®

Read my diary entries and find out how I eventually got the weight loss injections AKA Skinny Jab, Skinny Shot, Slim Jab, Skinni Jab, Slender Jab to work for me.

The middle of 2017 was the year of the start of my Skinny Jab journey. I spent a whole year buying Saxenda - taking it on, off, on, off, binning it, giving up on it and starting all over again. This left me de-moralised, deflated, financially poorer and really, really miserable!

Feeling such a failure - that this FDA approved weight loss medication was not even working for me. I eventually created my own plan - by putting all the pieces of the jigsaw together. The Skinny Jab was part of the plan - but I stress it is not a magic wand, it helped me control my hunger pangs and cravings. But it was not the whole story.

It was successful in helping me lose weight combined with other factors. I lost three stone in weight and took control of my life again, you can do the same!
